Fairy-tale sounds

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra will perform a fairy-tale ballet suite a few days before Christmas: Tchaikovsky's suite from the ballet »The Nutcracker« is one of his most popular works - and is traditionally found on the repertoire especially around Christmas time. Christoph Eschenbach not only conducts the charming ballet, which is based on the material of E.T.A. Hoffmann's tale »Nutcracker and Mouse King«, but also Tchaikovsky's only violin concerto. The composer wrote it in just three weeks in Clarens, a town situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Geneva. To this day, the work is one of the best-known and most frequently performed violin concertos - it demands technical perfection and an extraordinary musical sense: qualities that violinist Joshua Bell possesses in the best possible way, having already recorded a reference recording of the demanding composition on CD several years ago.
