Presented by Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft

Music from France

When the Orchestre National de France performs under its Romanian chief conductor Cristian Măcelaru at the Wiener Konzerthaus at the beginning of May, it will present a largely French program: Lili Boulanger, the younger sister of Nadia Boulanger who died at the age of just 24, is today considered one of the most frequently performed female composers and the main representative of French Impressionism. Her two pieces performed in this concert, which are among her last compositions, need not shy away from comparison with the works of her colleague Claude Debussy, who was almost exactly 31 years her senior and died ten days after her. Their mutual compatriot Alexandre Kantorow is the soloist in Frédéric Chopin's virtuoso 2nd Piano Concerto, which he wrote in his native Poland shortly before emigrating to France.
