»Life matters«

The Company of Music presents vocal music from the 20th century: Francis Poulenc's cantata »Figure humaine«, a symbol of humanity and freedom, was composed during the Second World War on poems by the surrealist poet Paul Éluard, who brought them to his readers under the most difficult conditions. Around thirty years later, Morton Feldman created his composition »Rothko Chapel« as a commission for the opening ceremony of the building of the same name with paintings by the American artist Mark Rothko. Feldman's composition was inspired by Rothko's fourteen paintings: »Rothko's depiction goes right to the edge of the canvas. And I wanted to achieve the same effect with the music. They should permeate the entire octagonal space [...].«
