Choral splendor of the 20th century
Intemperance in all its facets, the fleetingness of life and the beauty of the annual return of spring are the themes of the »Carmina Burana«. Carl Orff used the Latin and Middle High German texts of a collection of songs from the 11th and 12th centuries discovered in the Benediktbeuern monastery and set them to music anew. In composing them, he resorted to stylistic elements of the Middle Ages such as drone accompaniment or the use of church keys. In 1959, 22 years after the premiere of Orff's scenic cantata, Francis Poulenc's »Gloria« was composed, another large choral work. It will be heard for the first time at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 2024 and will open the concert of the RSO Vienna with the Vienna Singakademie and a select trio of soloists under the baton of Tobias Wögerer, conductor in residence at the Volksoper Wien.
