A stroll set to music

If you mention the name of Jean-Philippe Rameau to Teodor Currentzis, his language immediately becomes very flowery – almost literally so. »His music penetrates our hearts as directly as a sun ray cuts through the eternal darkness of space to reach the human eye, a green leaf or a rose blossom.« The French baroque composer is one of Currentzis' very special heroes. And together with his period-instrument ensemble, MusicAeterna, the maverick maestro will open the 2016/17 season with a very special selection of Rameau's ground-breaking music and compositions, a sort of stroll set to music. »The bowing is light, the sound delicate one minute and then bursting with vitality the next, but always with full and flowing contours, never like a French soft cheese [...] Currentzis never seeks to paint over the gnarled and knotty, the sensual or the visionary character of Rameau's music. An alert and creative spirit blows through the score, breathing life into it. And once it's over, you're not sure whether you've just heard music by Rameau, Elgar, Tchaikovsky or Stravinsky«, enthuses the Hamburg-based newspaper »Zeit« over the imaginative baroque interpretations of the Russian-based band. To put it even more succinctly: Rameau with Currentzis – that is pure avantgarde.
