Presented by Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft

Chicago, New York, Los Angeles

He comes from a truly musical family: his Dutch mother is a classical pianist, and his American father John Clayton, who has thrilled jazz audiences at the Vienna Konzerthaus on several occasions, is one of the best-known jazz bassists and big band arrangers around. Born in Utrecht and raised in California, Gerald Clayton now lives in New York. He dedicates his debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus to the artist Charles White (1918-1979), who addressed African-American life in the USA in his paintings and is one of the most important black artists in his country. In doing so, Clayton pays tribute to White along three stations of his life, namely the cities of Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, in which White - despite the liberal climate prevailing in them - had to make the typical »black experiences« in a »white world«. Clayton's composition is based on White's painting »Five Great American Negroes« from 1939 and the examination of the personalities depicted in it, who campaigned for the abolition of slavery or figured as role models as African Americans who were successful in science and art.
