Kindred spirits

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Robert Schumann, 30 years his senior, shared what can justifiably be called a kindred spirit. Ever since his student days with Anton Rubinstein, when he orchestrated the last two (Nos. 9 & 10) of Schumann's »Symphonic Etudes«, Tchaikovsky was one of the poetic Romantic's greatest admirers and continued to weave in little hidden tokens of love for his idol right up to his later works. Tchaikovsky was so impressed by Schumann's »Manfred« that he struggled with his own Byron musicalization for a long time before the »Manfred Symphony« was available in 1885. In their matinee, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Elias Grandy recalls this deep affinity of the souls of two 19th century grand masters.
