Presented by Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft
The Vienna Philharmonic and Philippe Jordan will open the 40th International Music Festival of the Vienna Konzerthaus exactly on the 100th anniversary of György Ligeti's birth with his epochal orchestral piece »Atmosphères«, which has become widely known not least for its use in the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's science fiction film »2001: A Space Odyssey«. The soloist for this opening concert will be our portrait artist Lisa Batiashvili, who will focus on Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto, a piece of which she has already made two authoritative recordings. The final piece of the program is the brilliant 2nd Symphony by Robert Schumann, which despite its qualities is not heard all that often.
