Beethoven squared
Few pieces of classical music are as widely known, even beyond the
confines of the practiced classical music audience, as Beethoven's 5th
Symphony. At least, this is true of its first four or eight notes, which
have earned it the problematic sobriquet of »Symphony of Fate«. And
although many think they know it well, even beyond its unison beginning,
there are always new and unheard-of interpretations to be gained from
it. This time, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra interprets the
indestructible work under the baton of Jaap van Zweden, who recently
shone with his Brahms interpretations at the Vienna Konzerthaus. The
main work of the first part of the concert is Britten's Violin Concerto,
which with its opening timpani solo inevitably recalls Beethoven - his
Violin Concerto, of course, but also a bit of the Fifth. The soloist is
Simone Lamsma, who has a close partnership with Jaap van Zweden.
