Church music in operatic guise

Giuseppe Verdi's »Messa da Requiem« is considered by many to be the most important church music work after Beethoven's »Missa solemnis«. However, this requiem mass, composed under the impression of the death of the writer Alessandro Manzoni, is just as unsuitable for liturgical use as Beethoven's festive mass. In both cases, the duration of the performance is much too long, the instrumentation much too large, and last but not least, the specific artistic weight much too great. Thus, both works have established themselves as full-length concert works, whereby the »Messa da Requiem« in no way denies the fact that its author was predominantly active as an opera composer. It is therefore all the more fitting that it is now being performed at the Vienna Konzerthaus by the orchestra and chorus (augmented by the Vienna Singakademie) of the Volksoper Wien, and that it is being conducted by the latter's music director Omer Meir Wellber. Internationally acclaimed opera stars are also the soloists of this evening.
