Presented by Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft

Dazzling late Romanticism

Christian Gerhaher will once again be able to prove that he is one of the most intelligent and sensitive Lied singers of our day in front of a large Konzerthaus audience at the beginning of March: with Gustav Mahler's enchanting Lieder based on texts by the linguistic genius Friedrich Rückert. Gerhaher has already made two standard-setting recordings of these songs: in 2009 the original piano version with his longtime piano partner Gerold Huber, then in 2013 the orchestral version with Kent Nagano at the conductor's podium. Another star conductor with whom Gerhaher has worked extensively is at his side this time in Daniel Harding. The Rückert songs will be flanked on this evening by Richard Strauss's popular tone poem »Also sprach Zarathustra« and another tone poem by the late Romantic Hugo Alfvén, which the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra will bring with it from his homeland: the Stockholm archipelago inspired Alfvén to write a symphonic landscape painting that is stylistically again quite close to Strauss.
