A feel for atmosphere

The cellist Gautier Capuçon is appreciated for his musical expressiveness, his great virtuosity and the deep sonority of his instrument »L' Ambassadeur«. With the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Andris Nelsons, who Gramophone Magazine described as having »a wonderful sense of atmosphere« in his interpretation of Shostakovich's works, he will perform his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 1. This will be followed in the second half of the concert by Sibelius' 2nd Symphony. It was already a great success at its premiere in 1902, partly because it was interpreted there as a symbol of resistance against the Russian oppression of the time.
