Novel wing beats
Birds flying high up in the sky: this could be a visual association that the music of Grandbrothers creates. However, their calm, almost magical sounds have less to do with birds' wings than with a grand piano with keys and hammers. It is no coincidence that Erol Sarp and Lukas Vogel, who are behind Grandbrothers, count John Cage among their role models. The avant-gardist was already experimenting with the instrument in the mid-20th century by attaching various objects between the strings. Grandbrothers combine classical piano music with electronic sound experiments and show how versatile this traditional instrument can still sound in the 21st century. While Sarp operates the keys, Vogel controls specially built electromechanical hammers and sound devices that elicit new voices from the grand piano. The result is an exciting dialogue between analogue and digital, between composition and sound research. Influenced by ambient, jazz, electronica and contemporary classical music, the two develop an unmistakable style that gives the sounds wings.
