Opulent pasticcio oratorio
»Deborah« is Handel's second oratorio on a biblical theme in English since he settled in Great Britain in 1727. It is about God's love for his people in the context of warlike conflicts. At its center is the story of Deborah, probably one of the most impressive female figures in the Bible. Handel created the score in great haste, using individual parts of his earlier works. The opulent oratorio has never been performed in its entirety at the Wiener Konzerthaus: This is about to change, as early music specialist Ton Koopman will perform it with his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir and an exquisite cast of singers. Belgian soprano and Handel expert Sophie Junker takes on the role of Deborah, while countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński sings Barak, the leader of the Israelite army.
