Ride through the classical era

The Hagen Quartet continued its exploration of Joseph Haydn, who so fundamentally shaped the string quartet genre. The program for this concert includes two of the so-called »Apponyi Quartets« from 1793, the period between his two stays in London. In addition to the quartet Hob. III:73 in F major, which begins like a fanfare, the program includes the so-called »Rider Quartet« Hob. III:74 in G minor - a key that already announces the special nature of this work. The expressive work received its nickname due to its lively »galloping« outer movements. Johannes Brahms' Third Quartet in B flat major op. 67 is an excellent addition to these two classics of the string quartet literature, as it is a classical, predominantly cheerful work that was clearly inspired by Haydn and quotes Mozart's »Hunting Quartet«. »Brahms seems to have set out this time to walk along a sunny meadow path«, according to a contemporary review.
