Conclusion of a portrait

»Nature, Life and Love« is the name of Dvořák's late overture cycle, from which »Carnival« is taken: a prelude to a concert evening full of tempo and variety, performed by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under old master Christoph Eschenbach and portrait artist Alexander Melnikov. The entertaining opening work is followed by Rachmaninoff's »Paganini Rhapsody«, which became a standard work in the virtuoso literature of the 20th century: Alexander Melnikov interprets the equally breathtaking and entertaining composition as a worthy conclusion to this year's portrait series. It was written during the last years of Rachmaninoff's life on Lake Lucerne, and he himself played the piano part at the premiere. The concert concludes with Dvořák's 8th Symphony, which had already begun its triumphal march with its premiere in 1890.
