Opening of the Vienna Music Festival
Klangforum Wien's first meta-opera was enthusiastically welcomed as a »reinvention of music theater« at its world premiere in Tiroler Erl in November 2022. »Amopera« is the ambiguous title of this semi-staged ride through the opera literature of the last 100 years, which can now be experienced in Vienna for the first time in two and a half years. From Zemlinsky to Sciarrino and Saunders to Xenakis, it is a wide-ranging journey dedicated to nothing less than love in all its possibilities and impossibilities. Together with the Belgian Needcompany, the musicians of Klangforum Wien present themselves as an unleashed collective of performers, unreserved and powerful. From the last scene of Alban Berg's »Lulu« to »Ach ich fühl's« by Bernhard Lang and »A respirar ritorno« from »Luci mie traditrici« by Salvatore Sciarrino, individual moments from recent opera history are interwoven using the techniques of montage, editing and condensation to create new effects. It traverses the glowing yet inhospitable terrain of love, its ecstasies, but also its contrasts, abysses and hopelessness. At the same time, »Amopera« in its unique constellation offers not only a musical journey through time, but also an intensive encounter with the joint scenic-performative work of the entire ensemble.
Together with Sarah Maria Sun and Holger Falk and under the guidance of Jan Lauwers, who caused a sensation at the 2021 Salzburg Festival with his production of Luigi Nono's »Intolleranza 1960«, the ensemble searches for a human representation of symbiosis and confrontation, of the possibility and impossibility of love between two people.
