Kindred spirit
For more than three decades, Hélène Grimaud has dedicated herself to the music of her »soulmate« Johannes Brahms. When she first became acquainted with the North German composer's first piano concerto many years ago, it opened up »a whole world for her into which one can let oneself fall without much thought«. She has often entered Brahms' concerto world, which roars like a primal force, on concert stages and has also recorded the work twice for CD, but she has never performed it in a constellation like she did two days before Brahms' 192nd birthday at the Vienna Konzerthaus: namely without a conductor! Grimaud can only dare to do this, however, because the Camerata has become a completely self-determined chamber orchestra in its almost 75 years of development. Led by concertmaster Giovanni Guzzo, the musicians play with creative »individual responsibility in the highest sense of community«, as the orchestra's founder and chief conductor Bernhard Paumgartner put it in 1952.
