Heavenly orchestral concert

Ying Fang and the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo, conducted by Fabio Luisi, perform Gustav Mahler's 4th Symphony, which is based on the song »Das himmlische Leben« - a seemingly naïve vision of paradise as a land of milk and honey, albeit a broken one in Mahler's work. None other than Konzerthaus honorary member Rudolf Buchbinder takes on the solo part in Edvard Grieg's only piano concerto. The composition was to help the 25-year-old Grieg achieve his breakthrough. Even Franz Liszt was once very enthusiastic about the work: Grieg met his contemporary in 1870 during a study visit to Rome. Liszt played the piano concerto straight from the page in the presence of several guests. Grieg told his parents about this experience in a letter: Liszt »left the piano and walked through the large monastery hall with huge theatrical steps and raised arms, singing the theme almost uproariously. At the fortissimo mentioned above, he stretched out his arm like an emperor and shouted: g, g, not g sharp! Famos!«
