Byrd & Brahms
Grigory Sokolov has returned to his pianistic laboratory: The sound magician now presents a program that juxtaposes music from the English Renaissance with that of the German late Romantic period. For example, he presents dances and fantasies from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, which contains around 300 compositions, in a new light: Works by William Byrd, who was well-liked at the Elizabethan court and one of the first to be granted the royal printing privilege. No less rhythmically pointed is the second half, in which Sokolov interprets Johannes Brahms' Two Rhapsodies op. 79: Clara Schumann wrote respectfully about the original compositions, which strive beyond their genre, that she first had to »study« them, Elisabeth von Herzogenberg received them with »welcome, you nameless in my heart in the misty dress of the rhapsody«. The rhapsodies became Brahms' most frequently performed piano works during his lifetime.
