Data Lords
With her own orchestra, founded in 1992, for which she has always composed the entire repertoire, Maria Schneider has all possibilities of musical expression open to her. In it, she has gathered together eighteen terrific jazz soloists who are fully committed to her musical imagination and thematic orientation, bringing the concentrated power of their playful personalities to bear. The seven-time Grammy winner writes the music on their bodies – thus they have become a living, sounding organism.
For years, Schneider has also been socially active, campaigning for the protection of intellectual property. She is angry at the power of data corporations and deeply concerned about how the digital world is changing the way people live together. With »Data Lords« she now addresses these issues on a musical level: »In revisiting my past recordings, it’s easy for me to see how my music has always reflected the world around me. But these days, I feel my life greatly impacted by two very polarized worlds: the digital world, and the organic world. While one world clamors desperately for our constant attention, the other really doesn’t need any of us at all. Amidst the noise and the clamoring, it now requires great effort for us to take real breaks from the digital world so that we can fully access the organic world that sustains us.«
