Schubertiade II
For a long time, Schubert's piano music was overshadowed by his lieder. This changed in the 20th century thanks to pianists such as Arthur Schnabel, Walter Gieseking and Wilhelm Kempff. One of the greatest interpreters of Schubert's piano works today is without doubt Sir András Schiff. At the second part of the Schubertiade, he will devote an evening recital exclusively to Franz Schubert. For him, Schubert's music is some of the most moving that has ever been written. The pianist plays on his Bösendorfer grand piano, which he had specially made and which is not balanced in the registers like other modern instruments, but has different registers for the low, middle and treble ranges like a fortepiano. »All instruments try to imitate the human voice, but this instrument does it at a very, very high level. It really is a singing instrument«, says Schiff.
