Old Masters

Thomas Bernhard hated birthday celebrations, which is why we would like to dedicate »Resonances« to him with the ironic subtitle »Thomas Bernhard on his 94th birthday«; just to say, of course, that there is no need for an external occasion to deal with the work and impact of an important author! Thomas Bernhard's last novel was published exactly 40 years ago. At the time, Suhrkamp boss Siegfried Unseld commented: »In your new book, you attack your fellow countrymen more harshly and mercilessly than in any of your previous texts.« Even if this is true at first glance, the »Old Masters« document a great and desperate love of art, Austria and its people. Sylvie Rohrer and Martin Schwab, two Burgtheater stars with Bernhard expertise, will read. They improvise and play along: Master gambist Paolo Pandolfo.
