»The Merry Widow« set to new music

Erich von Stroheim's silent film »The Merry Widow« is loosely based on Franz Lehár's operetta of the same name. However, the director focuses on the prequel and in a certain way justifies the behavior of the characters and the events of the stage work. Stroheim transforms the material of a light comedy into a satire on human behavior. In doing so, he created a cinematic work of art full of comedy and drama that shines with its detailed set design and outstanding cast - incidentally, Clark Gable can be spotted in a small supporting role. Now the silent film, shot in 1925, is being accompanied by a new score: Berlin stage composer Tobias Schwencke has been enlisted to compose it. He incorporated components of contemporary film music as well as motifs from the operetta: Lehár's Ballsirenen Waltz forms the core of the new setting. The new musical version will be performed by the experimental Ensemble Resonanz.
