Court jesters & court dwarfs

In Krista Fleischmann's documentary »Die Ursache bin ich selbst« (1986), the Hispanophile Thomas Bernhard once stands in front of the Velázquez portraits of the court jester Juan de Calabazas and the court dwarf Francisco Lezcano in the Prado: »The real ruler.« he says, »The idiot. Ruling absolutely. All two of them. Ruling debility. The real kings. Quite magnificent! The others are the real idiots.« No doubt: Bernhard recognized himself in the fool's freedom at the price of physical frailty. However, the Conjunto de Música Antigua Ars Longa is now attempting to reconstruct how this kind of mirror-acting might have actually taken place at the Madrid court of Philip IV with a semi-staged program. Freely adapted from Bernhard's dictum: »Folly is what makes us happy.«
