Unheard-of colorfulness

»He doesn't write music, he paints in tones«, said Igor Stravinsky about his fellow composer Maurice Ravel in 1928. He would have been 150 years old on March 7, 2025. For his instrument, the piano, he used his sometimes pointillist, sometimes impressionist, sometimes exotic brush to conjure up ghostly and natural creatures as well as ironic dances or works inspired by baroque piano suites on the staves. Anyone who wants to play them must have breathtaking virtuosity, but also be capable of quiet and vocal passages and have a pronounced sense of pianistic and orchestral sounds. To kick off the Ravel anniversary year, Seong-Jin Cho, who was born in Korea and lives in Berlin, will perform Ravel's entire oeuvre for solo piano in one evening. The »master of the virtuoso miniature«, as Cho has been described, and winner of the 2015 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw has already proven himself as a colorful interpreter of the works of Claude Debussy and Frédéric Chopin. After two wonderful concerts in the Mozart Hall, we are now looking forward to his debut in the Great Hall.
