Iberian friendship

The album »Rayana« by Cuca Roseta and Daniel Casares probably came about inevitably and yet also by chance: as fate would have it, the Portuguese singer Cuca Roseta and the Spanish guitarist Daniel Casares performed separately at the same festival. Without knowing it, they attended each other's concerts and were inspired by each other. Casares wrote to Cuca first: the Spaniard sent the Portuguese singer a large selection of Spanish songs to match the timbre of her voice. Cuca listened to the melodies, looked for the ones that moved her and read the lyrics carefully to understand whether they could also be her own. In doing so, she drew on her admiration for great Spanish voices: Estrella Morente, Diego el Cigala, Niña Pastori, Miguel Poveda and Enrique Morente. And of course she also knew the geniuses Paco de Lucía and Camarón de la Isla, who have become classics.
Rayana is the name given to the border between Portugal and Spain, but the title »Rayana« does not refer to the dividing line, but to a place of communication and togetherness: it is the place that the fado singer Cuca Roseta shares with the flamenco guitarist Daniel Casares. In »Rayana«, fado and flamenco are two languages that belong together and want to rediscover each other. The collaboration was facilitated by the understanding that there is a common expression in both genres, flamenco and fado, a mirrored way of expressing feelings.
