Startling topicality
Alongside the First, it is the symphony by Mahler that most closely
realizes the classical formal model, and yet it is also one of his most
modern creations: Although it was composed in 1903/04 during the
happiest phase of his life, the Sixth, which was given the nickname
»Tragic« early on, is undoubtedly Mahler's most pessimistic work. The
piece is probably one of the darkest in all of music, and is therefore
of alarming topicality in view of the much-cited multiple crises of our
time. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, who not only conducted the first
Austrian performance of the work by Mahler himself in 1907, but also
made his earliest recording in 1953, under the direction of Vladimir
Jurowski, chief conductor of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and
general music director of the Bavarian State Opera, is now demonstrating
its sensitivity.
