Johannes Brahms And Folk Music

With the program »Johannes Brahms and Folk Music«, baritone Rafael Fingerlos, song pianist Sascha El Mouissi and the folk and world music ensemble Tschejefem focus on the connection between folk and art music. With folk and art songs, some of which have been reworked, they explore Johannes Brahms' relationship to German-language folk songs as well as to the culture and nature of his adopted homeland of Austria. Josefstadt actor Michael Dangl will read from letters written by the composer.

The 26-year-old Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann that one ideal cannot be memorized firmly enough and »that is the folk song for me«. He collected folk songs for almost his entire life, arranged them in large numbers and used them as a source of inspiration for his own works. They shaped his entire oeuvre and found their way not only into his songs and chants, but also into his instrumental compositions.
