Devil's trill
»My breath caught and I woke up in a cold sweat, immediately grabbed my violin and wanted to play what I had heard - in vain!« wrote the celebrated virtuoso Giuseppe Tartini to a French colleague. The result, his »Devil's Trill Sonata«, remains a classic of violin literature to this day. Star violinist Joshua Bell includes it on the program of his concert, in which he also performs virtuoso works from the Romantic period: Franz Schubert's Fantasia in C major D 934 for violin and piano, which the latter composed for the »Bohemian Paganini« Josef Slawik. Finally, Gabriel Fauré's first violin sonata will also be performed. »This sonata has everything that can seduce: Novelty of forms, peculiarity of modulations, curious sounds, a wholly unpredictable use of rhythms; and over all this there is a magic which envelops the whole work and which leads the broad mass of ordinary listeners to accept unsuspected daring as the most natural thing in the world«, commented fellow composer Camille Saint-Saëns.
