How are you celebrating New Year's Eve?

Beethoven: Symphonie Nr. 9

Solemnly, the Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo will guide one of Vienna’s most traditional orchestras and an illustrious ensemble of soloists through the turn of the year. Beethoven’s setting of  Schiller’s »Ode to Joy«, which became immediately popular, has formed the highlight of our offering of New Year’s Eve events at the Wiener Konzerthaus. If you want to rejoice in the start of the New Year with this work, which has resonated musical charisma ever since its world première in 1824, you will have the choice of three opportunities to do so.

Habjan & Friends

Did you know that as early as the 1880s, whistling was  developed into an art form in Vienna? Appearances of whistling musicians were hugely popular – even crown prince Rudolf is supposed to have been a great admirer of the genre. Now, Nikolaus Habjan has rediscovered this highly unusual form of making music for himself – and whistles anything he takes a fancy to: »I’ve yet to find a piece that cannot be whistled«, claims the artist from Graz. Supported by his guests, he will accompany us into the New Year with his incredibly virtuoso »Hot Air«.

Strauss Festival Orchester Wien

It is the orchestra for the Viennese sound style: Since the 1970s, this orchestra, with its conductors Peter Guth and Willy Büchler, has spread the message of Vienna’s fin de siècle not just within the metropolis itself, but throughout the world. With this year’s programme »Tales from the Orient«, the Strauss Festival Orchestra proves that you can travel great distances also with the music of Strauß & Co, presenting compositions by members of the Strauß dynasty and Joseph Lanner.
