Frighteningly ingenious
»A different hand position every bar - do you think I'm going to sit
down for four weeks to study such an unruly piece?« Hans von Bülow once
refused to premiere the burlesque by his young protégé Richard Strauss.
He would later describe it as »ingenious« and »terrifying«. Rudolf
Buchbinder said in the BR Klassik interview: »There are various things
that are a new world for us pianists: the harmony, his rhythm and his
piano technique. We are not confronted with Strauss' music in any way,
not like a singer or string player - they grow up with Strauss. And it
was also one of the most difficult works for me to learn, study and work
on.« On two evenings, the experienced pianist will tackle this
imaginative composition with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the young
Latvian conductor Aivis Greters, before performing Jean Sibelius'
artfully orchestrated Second Symphony.
