Powerful compositions

»I want to write a cheerful symphony.« With these words, Dmitri Shostakovich announced his 15th symphony. The fact that it ultimately turned out more sombre than planned is not surprising when you consider the circumstances of his life. It was not only the repressive system to which he was subjected throughout his life that affected his mood, but also his poor state of health: the 15th Symphony was to be his last. The humor so typical of Shostakovich, which often tips over into the grotesque, remains unmistakable, for example in the use of the famous motif from Rossini's overture to »William Tell«. But this is just one of many quotations. Saulij Zinovjev's new percussion concerto »A Savage Beat«, an Austrian premiere, is also extremely diverse. The »... powerful composition takes the audience on an exhilarating journey through a thundering landscape of ancient and modern percussion instruments, with Japanese taikos, shimmering gongs, vibrating steel drums and much more, creating a truly breathtaking experience«, says Vivi Vassileva, the concert's soloist.
