»Vienna without Viennese?«
When asked »What would Vienna be without Wiener?« in 1964, Georg Kreisler's answer included: »As beautiful as a sleeping woman!« But that's not what Katharina Straßer and the Wiener Brut mean when they ask »What would Vienna be without THE Viennese?«, namely Hugo Wiener! And it has to be said: only half as funny. Legendary: the double conférences between Farkas and Waldbrunn, for which Wiener wrote the lyrics. Classics: several of the more than 500 chansons, including »Der Nowak läßt mich nicht verkommen« and »Ich wünsch' mir zum Geburtstag einen Vorderzahn«, which brought his wife Cissy Kraner great success as an interpreter. Hugo Wiener is also the author (as librettist and composer) of numerous operettas and countless television programs. Excerpts from his rich oeuvre turn this evening into a musical homage to one of the great artistic personalities of Viennese cabaret.
