Always in the Flow
The momentary, unpredictable musical flow characterises Martin Kohlstedt's concerts. He adapts the direction and expression of his music individually to the respective situation – with an open outcome. This is the basis of his self-image as an artist between classical piano and emotional improvisation. Kohlstedt's atmospheric sounds evolve with each performance and follow the principle of modular composition in free combinatorics, in which new pieces are constantly being created from existing ones. The music is fluid and organic.
Kohlstedt performs internationally with solo shows in renowned venues and at major festivals, such as the SXSW Festival in Austin, the Berlin festival XJazz and Hamburg's Elbjazz, the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie and the Tehran opera and concert hall Talar-e Rudaki. In 2018 and 2019, his collaboration with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Choir received much attention, both in the form of the album »Ströme« and in a series of concerts in which he improvised live with the choir.
