Old love

Martha Argerich has a special history with the city of Vienna. She came here at the age of 14 to study with Friedrich Gulda. He shaped her approach to Beethoven, awakened her love of jazz and trained her sense of musical humor.
After early competition successes in Bolzano and Geneva, her extraordinary career began - accompanied by radical retreats. Since 1983, Argerich has refrained from solo recitals, preferring to perform with orchestras or in chamber music ensembles. Now the legendary pianist performs Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Lahav Shani - a work that she has studied intensively for years. The second half of the program features Arnold Schönberg's symphonic poem »Pelleas and Melisande«. While Fauré, Sibelius and Debussy wrote incidental music or an opera on this subject - the unfulfilled love of the mysterious Princess Melisande, whom the ageing King Golo takes to his castle - Schönberg approached the drama purely instrumentally.
