An orchestra with a long tradition

The history of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia dates back to 16th century Rome. None other than Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was its president when it was founded. The associated orchestra was founded in 1908 and was the first in Italy to be founded specifically to perform symphonic repertoire. In one of its two guest performances at the Vienna Konzerthaus, the choir and orchestra can now be heard performing a composition that is closely linked to the founding of the Italian nation: Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem. The sacred work, which itself was composed for the concert hall rather than the church, certainly shows that its creator is one of the greatest opera composers of all time. The performance will be conducted by Daniel Harding, who has succeeded Sir Antonio Pappano as chief conductor of the orchestra since this season.
