Baroque Christmas splendour

The Christmas season is celebrated by the pioneer of historical performance practice, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, with baroque music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Marc-Antoine Charpentier. A musical depiction of laughter charmingly opens Bach's cantata »Unser Mund sei voll Lachens«, which he wrote for Christmas Day 1725 in Leipzig. The joyful anticipation of the Lord's arrival is also evident in his cantata »Schwingt freudig euch empor«, which includes dance choruses. Charpentier's Christmas »Midnight Mass«, in which he used traditional Christmas carols from France, also appears to be largely dance-like. These are mostly based on well-known secular melodies. It may have been quite a surprise for Parisian listeners at the end of the 17th century to recognise these in the Christmas Midnight Mass. Gardiner and his ensembles The Constellation Choir & Orchestra paint a colourful portrait of baroque Christmas celebrations.
