Haydn And The Consequences
In the 2024/25 season, the Hagen Quartet will continue its exploration of Haydn, which began in the previous season: while the ensemble last focussed on the late »Erdődy Quartets« op. 76, it is now turning its attention to two of the so-called "Russian Quartets" op. 33, with which Haydn finally established the classical genre standard in the early 1780s. They were written »in a completely new and special way«, Haydn himself said, and it was in fact precisely these quartets that made Haydn the definitive model for the quartet compositions of Mozart, Beethoven and the Romantic composers who followed. The latter also included Schumann, who opened his personal »chamber music year« in 1842 with the String Quartet in A minor op. 41/1 - and thus catapulted the genre into a new era.
