Masterpieces of chamber music masterfully interpreted: With violinists Isabelle Faust and Anne Katharina Schreiber, violist Antoine Tamestit and cellists Jean-Guihen Queyras and Christian Poltéra, five greats in their respective fields and accomplished chamber musicians dedicate themselves to the interpretation of Franz Schubert's last string quartet D 887 and string quintet D 956, his last and most outstanding chamber music works ever. The G major String Quartet was composed in 1826 during the final work on the great C major Symphony. The relationship between these compositional processes, which Schubert himself hinted at, is expressed, for example, in the string quartet's formal design, which aims for spaciousness. The formal, harmonic and compositional achievements of Schubert's late string quartets reach their final culmination in the String Quintet in C major, composed in 1828, the year of his death.
