Mahler 5

In 1988, the Vienna Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein presented what is probably the reference recording of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5. A few years earlier, there was still noticeable resistance to Mahler's »Kapellmeistermusik«, as was blasphemed here and there in the orchestra, and it took a Kapellmeister as ardent and rousing as Bernstein to lead the musicians back onto the »right path of virtue«. Today, Mahler's music is in the orchestra's blood and every performance of one of his works with the participation of the Vienna Philharmonic promises to be an artistic highlight. Together with Gewandhaus conductor Andris Nelsons, the Philharmoniker triumphed just last summer with Mahler's Ninth at the Salzburg Festival. There is no doubt that the performance of what is probably his most famous symphony under Nelsons' baton at the Vienna Konzerthaus will also cause storms of enthusiasm.
