The last will be the first.

The Budapest Festival Orchestra and its founder and conductor Iván Fischer present the first works of the four symphonies and four instrumental concertos by Johannes Brahms in the final concert of their four-part complete performance. None other than Sir András Schiff is the soloist in the Piano Concerto No. 1. Although this colossal piece seems so youthfully impetuous, it is the fruit of a lengthy and convoluted compositional process: originally begun as a sonata for two pianos and continued as the first symphony in the meantime, it only became the solo concerto we know today after five years of work. Brahms had an even more difficult time with his actual First Symphony. Its composition took over a decade and a half, with interruptions, and Brahms was almost in his mid-forties when he finally dared to step out of Beethoven's shadow with a symphony.
