Gustav Mahler's 8th Symphony is an exceptional work not only because of
its large-scale scoring with three choirs, eight vocal soloists and an
orchestra of well over a hundred instrumentalists, which earned it the
nickname »Symphony of a Thousand«. It also impresses with an enormous
variety of musical means and forms as well as the ingenious interplay
between the two very different texts set to music - the hymn »Veni
creator spiritus« and the final scene from Goethe's »Faust«.
Mahler
himself considered the 8th Symphony, whose premiere in Munich in 1910
was a triumphant success as a composer and conductor, to be his most
important work. »Imagine that the universe begins to sound and resound.
It is no longer human voices, but planets and suns orbiting«, he wrote
about the symphony to the conductor Willem Mengelberg.
