Musical appeal for peace
The orchestra's credo is more relevant than ever: music can build bridges and break down barriers. Daniel Barenboim and the Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said founded the orchestra 25 years ago with the aim of establishing a dialog between the different cultures of the Middle East and promoting peaceful coexistence through shared experiences with music. The orchestra, which consists mainly of Israeli and Palestinian musicians, is now a permanent fixture in the classical music world. Like Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, who is on friendly terms with the orchestra, expects more from his work on the conductor's podium than stimulating entertainment; he is committed to a better world. Music with a unifying, global character is also on the concert program, with Beethoven's Pastorale and Schubert's Great C major Symphony.
