Presented by Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft

Poetry and drama

For years, the Swedish soprano Nina Stemme has been regarded as one of the leading performers of the most demanding roles in great dramas: As a major Wagner, Strauss and Puccini interpreter of our day, she has continued the great tradition of the Nordic heroines Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson at the world's most important opera houses. Now she returns to the Vienna Konzerthaus as a soloist in a concert by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra with its chief conductor Ryan Bancroft to sing Mahler's »Kindertotenlieder« - a work from the era of the great dramas mentioned above, but which stands out from them with its lyrical intimacy. In contrast, Tchaikovsky's fateful 5th Symphony promises great drama, while a piece by Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi, commissioned by the orchestra, paints a picture of the Ligurian Cinque Terre.
