Pierre Boulez and his roots

Pierre Boulez, one of the most influential figures in musical life since 1945 as a composer, conductor and initiator of several institutions that are still effective today, wrote only one string quartet in his lifetime: his »Livre pour quatuor«, begun in March 1948, revised one last time in 2012 for the Quatuor Diotima and yet never completed, realizes - in this respect quite comparable to Stéphane Mallarmé's »Livre« - in a furiously paradoxical way both the indispensability and the impossibility of the total work of art. With nothing less than this iconic torso, we are now celebrating precisely this anniversary at the Wiener Konzerthaus - the day after the 100th birthday of our honorary member. The Quatuor Diotima precedes the capital fragment with two short works that exemplify the two traditional strands leading to Boulez: The late string quartet by Webern foreshadows the strict order of serial music, while the early one by Debussy represents the rhythmic flexibility and tonal richness of French modernism.
