Schumann goes East
»... how rich in invention, how interesting from beginning to end it is, how fresh and what a beautifully coherent whole!« wrote Clara Schumann of her husband Robert's Piano Concerto, at whose premiere in 1845 she served as soloist. In late March, Kirill Gerstein provides solo brilliance with his subtle interpretation of the work, which is one of the most popular in the genre. On the podium of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is Lithuanian Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. She became principal conductor of the aforementioned orchestra in the fall of 2016 at just 29 years old, making her the first woman to hold the position. When she appears with the venerable British orchestra - of which she has been Principal Guest Conductor since the beginning of the season - at the Vienna Konzerthaus, Mieczysław Weinberg's Sinfonietta No. 1 op. 41 will be heard for the first time alongside Sergei Prokofiev's suites from »Romeo and Juliet«.
