The new series of talks
What role do art and culture play in our society? Is culture »systemically relevant«? What value does art have today and for tomorrow? Which of the social issues is the art scene currently discussing? Which ones should it address? We are attempting to answer all of these questions with our new series of talks entitled »systemically relevant«: sociologist Laura Wiesböck will be talking to artists and experts several times throughout the season about topics that are burning on our minds.
The first topic is »Hope and utopia«. Both can strengthen communities and motivate people to change. They question the status quo and offer orientation, comfort, new perspectives and room to think about a better future. Currently, however, it seems that hopeful utopias have gone out of fashion, while the longing for lost pasts (»retropias«) is growing. How is it possible to preserve hope in the face of the threats of our present? Where is the boundary between wishes, blind confidence and optimism? How should a place be designed where a future seems possible? And what role do art and culture play in promoting hope and utopias? Sociologist Laura Wiesböck talks to philosopher Fahim Amir and director and singer Anna Mabo about these and other questions.
