Debut with a celebration of literature
Navid Kermani's new novel »Das Alphabet bis S« is being hailed as a literary feast: The novel immerses its readers in the life of a writer whose professional highs coincide with private lows - the loss of her mother, the breakdown of her marriage and, last but not least, the question of her own identity and the meaning of her own existence. Her attempt to come to terms with the multiple crises consists of reading all the unread books on the shelf - in alphabetical order, of course.
Born in Siegen in 1967, the author and Orientalist devotes himself, as so often in his work, to linking existential questions and feelings, which he brings together in a novel that breaks the genre norm. Navid Kermani's reading debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus will be accompanied by two of his long-time musical companions: the German-Taiwanese pianist Pi-hsien Chen, who has been described as a »keyboard explorer between worlds« due to her dazzling range of repertoire from Bach to Barraqué, and the percussionist, composer and performance artist Manos Tsangaris. This year, he is creating a new station theater as part of Wien Modern 37.
